Beyond Sharia: Leila Rahimi Bahmany on Freethinkers and Vernaculars in Anatolia

Leila Rahimi Bahmany is a postdoctoral fellow for the ERC-Advanced Grant Beyond Sharia: The Role of Sufism in Shaping Islam, (the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (Grant agreement No. 101020403) led by Professor Asghar Seyed-Gohrab. In her research, Leila examines the antinomian tendencies, anti-institutional subversive elements, and transgressive ideas in the poetry and prose of Kaygusuz Abdāl, who was a prominent medieval Sufi figure from Anatolia in the 15th century.

In this video, Leila explains that the resistance of qalandars such as Abdal went beyond opposing religious dogmas. They also turned against Persian and Arabic, the languages of the elite, by writing in vernaculars. The work of Abdal became a source for the Alevis in modern Türkiye and Syria.
