Florida schools increase background checks as security measure [Video]

The big picture: As school security stakes rise, the Pasco County school district has decided to get more serious about background checks for its volunteers.

Its effort is getting mixed reviews.

The district announced it would require all volunteers to get a Level 2 screening, which includes fingerprinting and national database searches. That part didn’t bother people too much. They like the idea of ensuring volunteers aren’t criminals.

But the attached $41.25 fee is another thing altogether. Some worried the charge would deter families that can’t afford it from volunteering. Others, meanwhile, said volunteers shouldn’t have to pay for the privilege of donating their services. The district is refining its message in advance of the official rollout on July 1.
