Homewood honors Lakeshore Lakers wheelchair basketball team after back-to-back national championships [Video]

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – The city of Homewood honored the back-to-back champion Lakeshore Lakers at Monday night’s city council meeting! The National Wheelchair Basketball Association varsity division champs are capping off another great season with a 20-2 record.

Like true champions, the team seems to already be looking ahead to next season. Head coach Savannah Gardner says the moment is over and done with and the goal now is to get back to work and do it again. She points out how significant it is though for the squad to get the same recognition as their able-bodied peers. Coach Gardner, a product of the Lakeshore Foundation, which is the nonprofit the team falls under, says it continues to be huge when it comes to providing opportunities for student athletes with disabilities.
