Lab school committee passes on NSU lab school application [Video]

The Virginia Board of Education’s lab school committee did not approve an application from Norfolk State University, making it almost certain that the university will not receive any money from the state’s lab school fund by the end of the fiscal year.

Lab schools, which are K-12 schools that partner with higher education institutions, are Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s signature school choice initiative. The schools are free and open to the public and set their own curricula and budgets, similar to charter schools.

Norfolk State University submitted an application for its proposed Young Scholars Academy Lab School on May 19. In April, the state legislature finalized its two-year budget, which does not include the additional $60 million that Youngkin had sought in the budget he proposed in December, or any new lab school money.

Any college or university that wants any lab school funding must have its application approved and signed by June 30, the end of this fiscal …
