Meet the Mayan farmers advancing sustainable agriculture in Guatemala [Video]

ASPROC is an association of farmers with more than 20 years of agricultural organization and production experience. They are specialists in greenhouse production of organic tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and other vegetables using organic inputs that are prepared on site, and have adopted highly efficient practices and technology to evolve from conventional to sustainable growing. More than 90 Kaqchikel Mayan farmers participate in the association’s production process, acquiring skills in construction, harvesting, and marketing. With WCK’s support and counterpart funding from other grants, ASPROC built a 2,300-square-meter greenhouse to produce salad tomatoes, harvesting 816 quintals – approximately 90 tons – of tomatoes every 90 days. With this increase in production they are aiming to double their sales and employment opportunities. Their workforce is benefiting not just from this increased opportunity but also from access to fresh greenhouse produce for their households. Guatemala is a country profoundly affected by climate change; greenhouse crops provide a clear and reliable path to strengthening food security. __ Launched after Hurricane María in 2017, and in operation through 2022, WCK’s Food Producer Network (FPN) helped smallholder farmers, fishers, and small food-related businesses revitalize their operations and begin to regrow their long-term capacity for food production, distribution, and sales. Through its three pillars—grants and loans, capacity building and networking, and volunteering and agritourism—FPN contributed to system-wide improvements in food and nutrition security and sustainability by growing the capacity of local communities to produce their own food. Lácteos Pachioj is a family run goat farm in which a rambunctious flock grazes on native plants along mountainside paddocks. The farm implements nature friendly grazing techniques that promote holistic and sustainable production of goat milk, cheeses, and yogurts. Isabel uses traditional farming techniques to reverse land degradation and ensure the sustainability of her operation. With its WCK grant, Lácteos Pachioj improved the entire production process. In the field, Isabel installed fencing to prevent her goats from grazing on neighboring farmland while also allowing her to rotate the flock between several paddocks. This is complimented by a new water collection and irrigation system to maintain the paddocks during the dry season. In the creamery, Isabel installed a pasteurizer and refrigerators to cut down production time and allow for higher output. Luckner Timothee, a backyard farmer and beekeeper, lost all his hives to Hurricane Dorian. He has been documenting his journey to restore his garden and rebuild his hive count on social media, garnering much positive attention and support both from fans and the media. Luckner used to sell his honey, hive products, fruits, and vegetables at the local farmers market and to school programs, and is now working to regain that productive capacity. Luckner also offers bee and hive removal and maintenance, which requires specialized tools because it tends to take place in odd and hard-to-reach places. El Comalote is a food business in Antigua that produces corn tortillas, nachos, tostadas, tacos, dough, tamales, and more from surplus native corn. By working with native corn they are both providing nutritious products for the city as well as improving food security through a sustainable agricultural system that benefits rural economic development and preserves native crops. As an added benefit, by buying surplus corn from smallholder farmers, they reduce food waste and help slow the rate of migration away from these farm communities by ensuring that these farmers can make a viable income to support their families. With WCK funds, El Comalote purchased industrial processing machinery and improved their post-harvest handling with new corn silos and moisture detectors. They have already increased their production by 600% and are growing their workforce to 10 full-time employees.
