A Putnam County man was ticketed after allegedly trapping and painting squirrels red to “keep track of those returning to his yard and causing his dogs to bark.” According to the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), this follows a series of “squirrel-painting” incidents in the Town of Patterson dating back to December 2023.

Officers from the Hollywood Police Department released the birds back into the wild during a clean-up initiative on 24 January.
