Third school budget vote in Lewiston, Maine [Video]

The nearly $110M budget includes reductions or cuts to several services and positions. Voting ends at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

LEWISTON, Maine — The Lewiston School budget is up for a third vote Tuesday after two previous proposals were rejected earlier this summer.

Voting began at 7 a.m. at the Longley School and the polling location will remain open until 8 p.m.

Superintendent of Schools Jake Langlais said the current proposal is less money than the previous two versions but still includes funding reductions in “numerous areas” like supplies, nutrition, and transportation, as well as the elimination of several positions.

Langlais said the process of tweaking the budget included weighing the “lesser of hard decisions” as district officials work to support an ever-growing district that includes nearly 6,000 students across ten schools and buildings, according to Langlais.
