City of Custer opens new nursing home for residents | News [Video]

CUSTER, S.D. – After around two years of planning and construction, Custer has opened a new nursing home.

As of mid-December, the brand-new Custer Care and Rehab Center has officially opened its doors for seniors, created after the previous facility was closed down back in 2021.

“There are four total wings in this facility,” Secretary for the Nonprofit Custer Cares Monica McGowan said. “We have got one of them done and then as that one fills, then we’ll start working on the other with local community assistance from the Lions Club and Rotary, City staff.”

According to McGowan, the new facility would not have been possible without such heavy community involvement. And city officials even setting aside a sales tax percentage from 2025 through the next three years to help with funding. But as of right now, finishing the rooms and the Medicare/Medicaid certification process are among their main concerns.
