In the rugged hills of Türkiye’s Black Sea coast, hazelnut production is still mostly manual and heavily reliant on seasonal hired labor. Each harvest season (August – September), Turkish migrant workers from the poverty-stricken South-East are employed to pick the hazelnuts. The Rainforest Alliance has worked in this region since 2014—partnering with local farmers, farmworkers, companies, NGOs, and the Turkish government. Together, we’re helping farmers transition to more sustainable growing practices and working to safeguard the human rights of farmworkers and their families.
