Federal grant to boost Oklahoma electric reliability – KTEN [Video]

DURANT, Okla. (KTEN) — Oklahoma’s electric grid will soon see a boost in reliability thanks to a $50 million grant from the Department of Energy.

Oklahoma Gas and Electric said it will use the funds along with company investments to provide grid automation to 92 circuits and 26 substations.

That, in turn, will improve reliability to about 90,000 customers.

“Federal funds from the DOE will allow OG&E to leverage our investments in the grid and improve reliability of the electric power system against extreme weather, while doubling the impact to our customers,” said company executive Christi Woodworth in a written statement.

She added that the company is also working on a proposal to include two mobile batteries to assist high-energy demand periods at substations.

The grant will let OG&E drop prices, which will help its customers in both hot and cold temperatures.
