TISHOMINGO, Okla. (KTEN) — Tishomingo Elementary School has received grants to grow its fine arts department in the past several years. On Wednesday, the Oklahoma Arts Council visited the school to see how students are benefitting.
“Their funding has changed my students’ lives and my life,” said Tishomingo Elementary fine arts director Trey Hays.
The school has been able to bring in resident artisans using the OAC’s small grants for schools.
“I’ve had a dance teacher, two drama teachers and a visual arts teacher consecutively in the last three years,” Hays said.
Drama teacher Doobie Potter said exposing children to fine arts can also help them in the classroom.
“Through the arts, you can open minds and get their minds ready to cram in all of the information they need for tests,” Potter said. “You learn how to express yourself and interact with others and how to present yourself and …
