Local nonprofits make adjustments to help people during freezing cold [Video]

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – The cold is making some local nonprofits adjust their normal protocols, as freezing weather adds risk of hypothermia or even frostbite for people staying outside.

“It’s going to be too cold for them to come out and stand three hours in the cold like this…. That can’t happen,” said Ken Hayes, the director of the Grand Lodge Food Pantry.

The pantry has monthly food distributions every third Thursday of the month, and Hayes had to cancel the January distribution because of the freezing temperatures and snow.

Hayes said it is too frigid for people to wait in line for hours before the pantry opens, which is what normally happens on distribution days.

“It’s way too cold for someone to just be standing… I understand that they need the food and it hurts my heart to stop it,” Hayes said.
