Riverhounds looking to triple Highmark Stadium capacity [Video]

Pittsburgh’s professional soccer team wants to expand Highmark Stadium.

The three-phase project would nearly triple the stadium’s capacity.

Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC owner Tuffy Shallenberger is seeking $10 million in grant money from the state and would put another $15 million for the first phase.

That proposal consists of seating expansion and an upgraded event center, a rooftop deck, suite seating, and locker room upgrades.

Shallenberger tells KDKA Radio the expansion would be an economic positive for the area

He says they’ll also attract national music acts looking for a mid-size concert venue.

There are a few different contractors looking at the space that is available near Station Square.

He believes they can have between 13,500 to 15,000 seats when the expansion is done.

For concerts, he says a few thousand more seats will be added on the grass.

Shallenberger says they are looking at bringing in a female soccer team to the Pittsburgh area and that they want to perfect the Riverhounds in the USL league before considering a …
