Finally, after all the preparation and training – the Grand Slam is officially starting this weekend with Old Dominion 100 (OD100). I’m looking forward to meeting all the slammers for this year. OD100 is an iconic and historical 100 miles ultramarathon taking place in Fort Valley (Virginia) early June. Its history is intertwined with Western States 100 – originally a horse race, it transitioned to runner in the 70’. What is unique and amazing about OD100 is that they remain true to their root – this race is non-commercial, no sponsor, etc. There is a unique ‘family’ and ‘tradition’ vibe here which brings a unique charm and is a stark contrast with many other famous races. This charm attracts a unique crowd of runners that are incredibly helpful and positive – running this race year after year. The relatively small size of the event also favors interaction with others, and you will immediately feel part of this amazing community. For example, the mandatory race briefing on Friday, and the traditional breakfast/award ceremony on Sunday. Here at OD100, it’s you against the clock, against the course. And as such, finishing regardless of time is cause for celebration. During the award ceremony, every finisher is called – one at the time – to shake hand with the organizers, give a small speech, and – if completing sub24 – grab your buckle.2022 is my second year, and I’m nervous about this race. Last year, I came in relatively well trained and fresh – yet it took me everything to finish (26h17m). The cutoff being 28hrs, this wasn’t much cushion. The heat was certainly a big factor. This year, I come in slightly injured (ankle), not very well-trained, and having raced a lot already this year (this is 100miles #5, with SAMO only 3 weeks ago). ———————————————–I am once again teaming up with the LifeTime Foundation to raise fund to feed healthy meals for kids at school.
