Albuquerque’s westside emergency shelter in search of new operator [Video]

Video above: The city of Albuquerque is in search of a new operator to run its Westside Housing Emergency Center. According to the city, Heading Home will no longer run Westside shelter’s facility after its 3-year contract is set to expire in June 2024. However, the nonprofit shelter has agreed to extend its agreement on an emergency basis. MORE: Westside Housing Emergency Center expands resources”Heading home has been a great partner for a number of years. We’ve already extended their contract on an emergency basis for an additional year. What we need to do now is make sure that we have an operator who’s ready to take it for the next three years,” City of Albuquerque’s Homeless Innovations officer Maria Wolfe said. Stay up-to-date: The latest headlines from KOAT Action 7 News”The Westside shelter is very important for our continuum of care and our system of care for people who are unhoused. This is the largest shelter in our state. We are sleeping over 500 people a night at this shelter on average, and they need to know that they’re going to have a safe place to be. They need to know that that’s not going to be interrupted for their peace of mind,” Wolfe said.”We had our first RFP process and the response to that request for proposals. We received two proposals. One was to be an operator for the entire facility. One was to only provide specialized services for one population because the one proposal for the entire operation did not meet our basic administrative requirements for a proposal. We could not consider that application,” Wolfe said.According to the city, the RFP for operations will be for $3.1. million and $750,000 for social services. The amount is less than what Heading Home receives annually because the city anticipates its new contractor to be in place for less than its full fiscal year. Heading Home’s annual contract is $4.1. million. KOAT reached out to Heading Home for its reason to no longer renew its contract to run the Westside shelter facility, but calls were not returned.
