Clemson given multimillion-dollar, how will the school use it? [Video]

STORY AS WE GET IT. $12.5 MILLION. THATS HOW MUCH THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT JUST AWARDED CLEMSON UNIVERSITY TO HELP WITH THE POWER GRID FAR INTO THE FUTURE. OUR NATE STANLEY HAS MORE ABOUT HOW THE SCHOOL EXPECTS IT WILL IMPACT THE STATE. THE MONEY WILL GO TOWARDS CLEMSONS POWER GRID RESEARCH. ONE PROFESSOR SAYS AS THE STATE CONTINUES TO GROW AND WEATHER IMPACTS OUR POWER GRIDS, THE MONEY COULD EVENTUALLY HELP MAKE OUR POWER MORE STABLE AND SUSTAINABLE. SO WE WANT TO ENSURE THAT CLEMSON AND THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA REMAIN ON THE CUTTING EDGE OF SUPPORT OF THE ELECTRIC POWER INDUSTRY. DANIEL NANIKHIR, WITH CLEMSONS DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING, SAYS THIS $12.5 MILLION GRANT WILL HELP UPGRADE THE SCHOOLS ELECTRIC GRID SIMULATOR. SO THE INVESTMENT WILL BE FOR ELECTRONICS UPGRADES WITHIN THE EXISTING GRID, HARDWARE AND THEN FOR THE DEVELOPMENT AND DESIGN OF AND BUILDING OF THESE TWO MOBILE UNITS. THE FEDERAL GRANT TOTALED $45 MILLION AND WENT TO SEVERAL STATE UNIVERSITIES FOCUSED ON GROWING SOUTH CAROLINA, WHICH IS WHY POWER GRID RESEARCH IS NEEDED NOW. BUT SIMPLE GROWTH OF THE STATE POPULATION GROWTH, INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT, AND SO FORTH PLACES NEW DEMANDS ON THE EXISTING ELECTRIC GRID. AND WITH SOUTH CAROLINAS HOT SUMMERS, NONAKA TELLS ME, THESE ADVANCEMENTS COULD HELP CURB FUTURE BLACKOUTS, TOO. SO THE MORE EXTREME HEAT DAYS THAT YOU HAVE, THE MORE THE SYSTEM YOU HAVE IS AT RISK OF HAVING THE DEMAND EXCEED WHAT IT CAN SUPPLY. THE THING THAT WE WANT TO AVOID IS OUTAGES. UM, ESPECIALLY EXTENDED OUTAGES DURING EXTREME WEATHER. AND CLEMSON IS WAITING FOR A SPECIFIC TIMELINE FROM THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT FOR WHEN THE FUNDS ARE EXPECTED TO REACH THE UNIVERSITY.

Upstate high schoolers can earn credit towards nursing degree [Video]

THE WEEKEND. WELL TALK MORE ABOUT THAT COMING UP IN JUST A FEW MINUTES. GRIFFIN THANK YOU. USC UPSTATE IS PARTNERING WITH DORMAN HIGH SCHOOL IN SPARTANBURG DISTRICT SIX TO OFFER STUDENTS A CHANCE TO GET COLLEGE CREDIT TOWARD A NURSING DEGREE. AND THIS PARTNERSHIP IS A TWO YEAR PILOT TO TRACK THE PROGRAMS SUCCESS. AND IF IT WORKS, THE COLLEGE IS HOPING TO EXPAND IN OUR. NICOLE PENIX IS JOINING US LIVE WITH ALL THE DETAILS. GOOD AFTERNOON. RASHAD, USC UPSTATE JUST RECEIVED A GRANT. FOR $120,000, AND THEY FEEL CONFIDENT THAT THIS PILOT PROGRAM WILL NOT ONLY HELP THE INDIVIDUAL, BUT IT WILL BENEFIT THE COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE. THE GRANT FOR $120,000 WAS GIFTED TO THE MARY BLACK COLLEGE OF NURSING AND THE COLLEGE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY AT USC UPSTATE TO GO TOWARDS CLASSROOM EQUIPMENT AND ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY COURSES AT DORMAN HIGH. I THINK THIS IS AWESOME. THIS IS GOING TO CREATE A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS THAT THEY PREVIOUSLY DIDNT HAVE BEFORE, BECAUSE CURRENTLY, NOW STUDENTS CAN TAKE SOME DUAL ENROLLMENT COURSES, BUT THEY DONT. THEYRE NOT ABLE TO TAKE THAT SCIENCE COURSE WITH THE FUNDS THAT WE HAVE SECURED, WE WILL BE PURCHASING AN ANATOMAGE TABLE, WHICH IS A VERY LARGE THINK OF IT AS A VERY LARGE IPAD WITH ANATOMICAL VIRTUAL IMAGES LOADED ON IT. WE WILL ALSO BE ABLE TO SUPPORT SOME OF THE TEACHING STAFF THAT WILL BE OFFERING THESE COURSES, AND AS WELL AS HELPING SUBSIDIZE THEIR TRAVEL TO THE HIGH SCHOOL. STUDENTS WHO SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE THE COURSES WILL RECEIVE CREDIT TOWARDS A NURSING MAJOR AND THOSE WHO TAKE ADDITIONAL DUAL CREDIT COURSES LIKE ENGLISH, COLLEGE MATH AND COMPUTER SCIENCE WILL ENTER USC UPSTATE AS A SECOND SEMESTER FRESHMAN. THEY ARE TAKING THE EXACT SAME COLLEGE LEVEL COURSE THAT THE STUDENTS HERE AT THE UNIVERSITY TAKE ARE TAUGHT BY THE SAME FACULTY, AND THEY USE THE SAME TEXTBOOKS AND SAME RESOURCES. SO THE STUDENTS WILL BE GETTING THE ABSOLUTE SAME QUALITY COURSEWORK AS A COLLEGE LEVEL STUDENT. THE PILOT PROGRAM WANTS TO BE ACCESSIBLE TO STUDENTS WHO DONT ALWAYS HAVE THE SAME OPPORTUNITIES AS OTHERS. FINANCING HIGHER EDUCATION IS REALLY EXPENSIVE FOR STUDENTS AS WELL AS THEIR PARENTS, AND DUAL ENROLLMENT CREDIT. IT COMES AT A LOT LESS EXPENSIVE COST TO THOSE FAMILIES. IF THE PROGRAM IS SUCCESSFUL, USC UPSTATE WILL EXPAND TO OTHER SCHOOLS IN THE AREA. ALL RIGHT, TENNECO STUDENTS AND THEIR PARENTS, THEY WANT TO KNOW WHEN WILL THESE COURSES BE AVAILABLE FOR THOSE STUDENTS. WELL, RASHAD, THE GOAL IS FALL 2025. SO WELL BE LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT FOR NOW. REPORT
