Budding Artists | Drawn to Life: Animation in Nature with Mike Cope | Fall 2021 (4K) [Video]

Highlights of Grades 5 to 7 students participating in our Fall 2021 “Drawn to Life: Animation in Nature” program hosted by the DSBN Living Campus at Woodend Conservation Area (Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada). It was great to resume teaching these in-person workshops while safely adhering to and respecting all school COVID-19 protocols that were in effect at the time.Students enjoy a full day of learning about and exploring animation, taking taking inspiration from Nature in the beautiful natural environment of the DSBN Living Campus. We begin our day outside doing some pixilation (stop-motion) exercises that help us introduce some basic principles of animation (ex. squash and stretch) and technical terms (ex. persistence of vision, frames-per-second, cycles). Students then brainstorm ideas for their own hand-drawn animations inside our classroom, where they use traditional drawing tools (pencil & paper), animation peg bars and LED Light Pads. Each student’s background and animation drawings are then photographed at the computer using stop motion software and a webcam mounted on a camera stand. This arts education experience was made possible thanks to the generous support of the Ontario Arts Council’s “Artists in Communities & Schools Projects Grant” and the District School Board of Niagara’s Outdoor Education.Special thanks to the The National Cartoonists Society Foundation (NCSF) for the LED Light Pads used by the students who attended this workshop. How philanthropy can advance environmental justice [Video]

Community well-being is intrinsically tied to environmental health. The environment cannot be ignored in efforts to advance human rights, social justice, health equity, and other priorities. The environmental justice movement has broadened the scope of environmentalism beyond conservation and protection to aiming for the creation of healthy places to live for everyone. How do we treat those affected by pollution, climate change, and other costs of economic production fairly? How do we meaningfully involve stakeholders in the decisions that affect their lives? This panel explored how philanthropists and funders have been—and should be—approaching this movement toward environmental justice. They discussed the role of philanthropy, as well as recommendations for nonprofits seeking to deepen partnerships with philanthropists in these areas.Moderator: Dr. Carolyn Kissane, Academic Director and Clinical Professor, NYU SPS Center for Global Affairs; Director, NYU SPS Energy, Climate Justice, and SustainabilityPanelists:Jamiah Adams, Senior Vice President of Diversity and Justice, The Climate Reality ProjectLylianna Allala, Climate Justice Director, City of Seattle’s Office of Sustainability and EnvironmentMelissa Miles, Executive Director, New Jersey Environmental Justice AlliancePeggy Shepard, Co-Founder and Executive Director, WE ACT for Environmental JusticeThis event series is offered as a collaboration between Aperio Philanthropy and the George H. ESU Foundation Hosts Ribbon Cutting for Football Locker Room [Video]

The East Stroudsburg University Foundation hosted an official ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday, April 23, 2022 at the new Warriors football locker room in Koehler Fieldhouse. The You WIN In the Locker Room First campaign, a $750,000 fundraising initiative, was launched by the ESU Foundation and the Department of Athletics on Oct. 8, 2020. The campaign kicked off with a virtual event that invited more than 100 alumni and friends of the program to learn more about the project. A 17-member fundraising committee was tasked with reaching out to alumni and friends, led by co-chairs Pat Flaherty ’78 and Mike Terwilliger ’78. The campaign surpassed its goal and raised over $860,000.Rich Santoro, executive director of the ESU Foundation, said the swiftness of the fundraising shows the dedication and loyalty of ESU alumni. “To hit our goal at the six-month mark is pretty much unheard of. The football program is close-knit group of alumni and we had more than 200 former players donate from every generation, the 1960’s through recent graduates in 2020, help make this new locker room a reality. We’re excited to bring all of our donors back to celebrate.”The upgraded facilities include 30-inch wide, open cherry-wood lockers with LED lighting, replacing the existing grey metal lockers, a cell phone charging station, an equipment drying system on top of each locker, and a speaker system to pump music throughout the space. The space includes seven named areas, including the academic center where players can work on assignments, and coaches’ space. All the lockers have been sold and contain a plaque bearing the name of a campaign donor.”Everybody involved with this project was committed to creating a space that reflects both pride of place, and pride of people who occupy that place,” said Warriors head coach Jimmy Terwilliger ’07. “The football alumni are extremely proud and will do what they have to do to help our team contend for championships.”The reveal of the new locker room took place before the Warriors Football spring game at Gregory-Douds Field at Eiler-Martin Stadium later Saturday.
