Vajdahunyad Castle is a dominant feature of the City Park, and undoubtedly one of the most romantic places in Budapest. It is located on a small island called Széchenyi Island, surrounded by the boating lake of the City park. The castle, made originally of wooden planks and cardboard designs, was supposed to be just a temporary structure built for the Millennial Exhibition in 1896, to showcase the architectural treasures of the 1000 years old Hungarian State. It was designed by Ignác Alpár , who blended the most characteristic details of 21 well known historic buildings from all over Hungary, into a composite fairy-tale castle. Hungarians loved the castle so much, that after the closing of the exhibition, it was rebuilt in stone. At the time of its construction Hungary was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, that collapsed in 1918, and some of these buildings today are found outside the border of Hungary. The buildings can be divided into 3 well distinguished sections according to their architectural styles. The Romanesque section displays the oldest buildings of Hungary from the 11th to the 13th century. The most characteristic of them, the replica of the Church of Jak – extended also with a beautiful cloister – is a functioning catholic church too. The most striking element of the 14th and 15th century Gothic section, and the whole building as well, is the replica of the Transylvanian Castle of Vajdahunyad – once called the King of Castles – found today in Romania. No wonder, the local people named the whole castle after this part Vajdahunyad Castle, which name eventually stayed with it. It is often referred to as Dracula’s castle, as the character of count Dracula of Bram Stoker’s famous novel, was most probably inspired by the merciless Vlad the Impaler, the 15th-century Transylvanian prince, who was imprisoned in the medieval castle of Vajdahunyad by Janos Hunyadi, the father of king Matthias, who built Matthias church in the Buda Castle. An interesting feature is that in 2003, a Dracula statue – made by a German sculptor – was secretly placed into a niche, located on the south-eastern corner of the castle. The bust depicts the Hungarian actor Bela Lugosi in his Dracula cape, the star of the very first Dracula movie released in the United States in 1931 . When he died in 1956, he was buried in his Dracula cape, and got also a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The Baroque-Renaissance section features a spectacular baroque palace, merging the most characteristic elements of rich Austrian palaces of the Empire. The building has been home of the Hungarian Agricultural Museum since 1897. The statue located in front of the Museum, depicts an early 13 century monk, called Anonymus, who was the first chronicle writer of Hungary. We can’t see his face, as we don’t know his name. His figure is completely dark while his pen is shiny, as thousands of students come to touch it before their exams, believed to bring fortune. The castle courtyard is opened until midnight and can be visited free of charge. The Gatehouse tower located at the main entrance, offers a small exhibition of the history of the castle, and a nice view of the castle courtyard and the City Park from above. You can also book a tour of the Apostles’ tower, that provides a 360 degree panoramic view of Budapest. This sleeping beauty castle, which has been a favorite place of the locals for over 100 years, is a must see attraction for visitors in Budapest too.
