ALEXANDRIA, Va. — A Northern Virginia cancer survivor is quite literally standing up to cancer.
For a decade now, Pat Malone, a 20-year Air Force veteran and a cancer survivor from Alexandria, has stayed standing for 24 consecutive hours to raise awareness and funds for Stand Up To Cancer. The cancer charity works to find the latest treatments and share research.
Malone says he’s raised tens of thousands of dollars. Back in 2013, Malone endured a seven hour surgery to remove a hockey puck sized tumor in his chest followed by months of radiation.
He was declared cancer-free in 2014. In that same year, he started holding this unique fundraising event for research and to honor the medical teams at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and Fort Belvoir Community Hospital who he says saved his life.
