ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – As part of a recent public health emergency, Anchorage cold weather shelters are now doubling as warming centers as bitter-cold temperatures continue to threaten the lives of those experiencing homelessness in the city.
Now, as the warming centers fill up around town, the municipality is calling on the community to donate snacks, winter gear and blankets.
“These jackets, these socks, these gloves, honestly it’s a blessing because these people don’t have anything. So it helps out a lot,” said Rafael Narvaez, the shelter lead at the 56th Avenue shelter. “Everybody’s warm. Nobody’s freezing.”
Mayor Dave Bronson made the emergency declaration on Friday, and on Sunday, the Anchorage Assembly approved a resolution that extended the emergency declaration through Feb. 13.
“Together, we are demonstrating the strength and compassion that make Anchorage a place we are proud to live,” Bronson said in a press release.
