Blount County receives federal money for emergency food and shelter programs [Video]

The Department of Homeland Security awarded more than $35,000 to the county.

The Department of Homeland Security, along with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, has allotted $35,502 to the county to be used to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county.

According to the United Way of Blount County non-profit organizations can apply for the money, however, these groups must follow certain criteria to be eligible.

The groups are required to be private, voluntary non-profits or units of government, be eligible to receive federal funding, have an accounting system, practice non-discrimination and have a history of running emergency food or shelter programs. 

Any private organization that applies has to have a voluntary board to qualify. 

Local nonprofits have until noon on June 3 to apply for some of the money and can contact Wendy Wand with questions and to receive an application at WWand@UnitedWayBlount.org.
