CMS leaders eliminating vacant positions to avoid laying off employees Queen City News [Video]

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Charlotte Mecklenburg School leaders say employees won’t lose jobs when pandemic funding ends this year. CMS is set to lose $190 million in federal pandemic dollars by the end of the fiscal year.

CMS Schools have been getting additional funding through the Elementary and Secondary Schools Emergency Relief Fund since 2020. The money was allocated by Congress during the pandemic to help districts across the country shrink class sizes and adjust to COVID-19 changes. The federal government has declared the pandemic is over so now that funding will end.

In an email to employees, CMS Superintendent Dr. Crystal Hill says the district will lose $190 million in pandemic funding with $60 million of that money tied to people.

“People aren’t losing their jobs, they may lose the position that they’re in because the position is going away,” Dr. Hill said. “The plan and the approach that we’ve taken …
