Deputy Premier Steven Miles has addressed the media for possibly the last time before Cyclone Jasper cross the Queensland coast.
Mr Miles said the SES had already received 80 calls for help since Tuesday and that 93 people were currently in evacuation centres.
The deputy premier said he planned to travel to Cairns today.
‘It’s my intention to travel to regional Queensland today to be as close as I can safely be while out of the way of those who need to respond to the cyclone, so I can be on the ground in Cairns as quickly as is safe and appropriate,’ he says.
The Bureau of Meterology’s Laura Boekel said dangerous weather conditions would intensify throughout the day as the system moves towards the Cape York Peninsula.
She said Jasper would cross the coast as a category two cyclone but was unlikely to intensify to a category three storm.
