DEC Documentary On Invasive Species Earns NYS Emmy | News [Video]

UTICA, NY (WKTV) – The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation won a pair of New York State Emmys.

In 2023, the Uninvited: The Spread of Invasive Species documentary was nominated for four Emmy Awards.

Two DEC staff received their official Emmy Awards for producing in the “Documentary Topical” category:

Josh Thiel – DEC Invasive Species Coordination Section Chief

Emma Antolos – DEC Public Participation Specialist

They helped lead a team of experts from DEC’s Division of Lands and Forests and partners, the eight New York State Partnerships for Regional Invasive Species Management (PRISMs), New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation, New York Natural Heritage Program, Cornell University, and public participants to produce this documentary about the significant threat invasive species pose to New York’s biodiversity and ecosystems, as well as public health and the State’s economy.

Communities depend on a thriving mangrove ecosystems for food and livelihoods, and a square mile of healthy mangrove forest can sequester carbon 10 times faster than the same area of mature tropical forests. But mangrove forests can also emit greenhouse gases when disturbed or degraded. In Ecuador, fishing communities and scientists work together to restore these forests and understand the climate benefits they provide to the world.
