WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) – Derby Rotary Club’s feed a Hungry Child Program makes sure that kids are able to access lunch at school. The school district received a check in the amount of $8,700 toward this mission.
Program founder Robert Mendoza said, “I spent most of my childhood in the foster care system and so as I moved from foster home to foster home, I was often delayed with food cards or access to food.”
Mendoza added that starting the program became the answer to a problem that he could solve on a local level.
The program began in 2017 and this past school year it fed 163 kiddos. Recipient of the donation, Martha Lawson, said kids should spend time learning and not having to worry about meals. According to Lawson, almost 50 percent of the kids in Derby get free or reduced lunches.
