In Egypt, the prominent opposition politician Ahmed Tantawy has been sentenced to one year in prison. The court has also banned him from running in elections for five years. 21 of Tantawy’s supporters remain in detention, and his campaign manager also received a one-year prison sentence. Their alleged offences are associated with Tantawy’s presidential challenge to President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. Egypt’s repression of Tantawy and his supporters shows that authorities will not tolerate a serious challenge to President al-Sisi. The Egyptian authorities should immediately throw out the abusive charges against Tantawy and his supporters, and release all those detained.
