Lawrence, Kansas, Police Department Patrol Service Dogs Cheeseburger (now retired), Big Mack, and Shadow are no strangers to jumping into service. But a more “artistic” vision is getting them national attention. K-9 Big Mack and his handler, Officer Kevin Henderson, will be featured on Thursday’s “Kelly Clarkson Show” on KMBC 9, not for his work at catching bad guys, but for the unusual way they helped raise money for ballistic vests. Art created by the K-9s (you read that right) is auctioned off through Friends of the Vest Midwest to help raise money for custom-made ballistic vests intended to keep the K-9s safe while on duty.Officials said some of those paintings have sold for up to $2,000 to help raise money for the charity.Learn more about the mission Thursday at 3 p.m. on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” on KMBC 9 News.
