SALEM, Ore. — Gov. Tina Kotek has signed a bill into law that funds summer learning across the state.
House Bill 4082 was passed during this year’s legislative session and provides $30 million in funding for summer school programs. It also requires the Oregon Department of Education to study how to make summer learning a permanent feature in the education system.
However, one of the largest school districts in the state isn’t getting any money from the funding.
“We’re up against cutting $15 million over the next two years,” said Bret Champion, MSD’s superintendent, at last week’s school board meeting. “We were counting on the summer school money because they just passed $30 million in the state and not a penny is coming to the Medford School District right now.”
