NY DEC members win Emmy for documentary [Video]

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A big Hollywood week for the New York State Department of Environmental conservation. As two staff members, Josh Thiel and Emma Antolos won their first Emmys!

They helped lead the team to produce a documentary called “Uninvited: The Spread of Invasive Species” about the major threat invasive species pose to New York’s biodiversity and ecosystems, as well as the public’s health and state’s economy.

The documentary was released in 2021 on YouTube and has since become the DEC’s most viewed YouTube post.

Mangroves are the passport to our survival as a species. Communities depend on a thriving mangrove ecosystems for food and livelihoods, and a square mile of healthy mangrove forest can sequester carbon 10 times faster than the same area of mature tropical forests. But mangrove forests can also emit greenhouse gases when disturbed or degraded. In Ecuador, fishing communities and scientists work together to restore these forests and understand the climate benefits they provide to the world.
