Over 200 Charleston students build rowboats in Lowcountry STEM program [Video]

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – Over 200 Charleston County students built 14 rowboats to set sail downtown today. Program officials say the boats apply science, technology, engineering, arts and math lessons to the real world.

County students across seven schools built 12-foot row boats to be released downtown at Colonial Lake. Students will release their boats starting at 10 AM to 3 PM.

The fifth to eighth-grade students built Bevin’s Skiff boats. Program officials say these flat-bottom boats are used as a teaching method for first-time build and use.

Lowcountry Maritime School Partners is a nonprofit organization that uses hands-on projects such as the annual boat building program to teach STEM lessons.

Students worked for months beginning in September of last year to January of 2024. Students crafted their boat from scratch from calculation plans of buoyancy to adding the final coat of paint.
