Episode 40: How Mental Health Affects Your Finances [Video]

On this episode of Millennial Debt Domination, Katie discusses the impact mental health issues have on finances. The month of May highlights Mental Health Awareness. Mental Health Awareness is the ongoing effort to reduce the stigma around mental illness and mental health conditions by sharing your personal experience. Finances not only have a big impact on your mental health, but having mental health issues can also impact your finances. The decline in your mental health makes it harder to manage money. You may find it more difficult to concentrate or lack the motivation to pay your bills on time. You could also lack the confidence in your career which could lead to taking time off work or loosing your job entirely which would leave you with no income. Today I’ll be joined by Amy Ryan who is a clinical social worker and therapist. Amy counsels many clients with mental health issues who are in turn struggling with their finances. Katie and Amy discuss feelings associated with money, coping mechanisms used for depression, how having mental health problems affects your ability to save money, and much more. Human to Human (30 Seconds) [Video]

Communication can end the stigma surrounding mental health and save lives. So let’s build that bridge, make that call, send that text, and form those connections with each other. Human to Human. Bring Change to Mind (BC2M) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to encouraging dialogue about mental health, and to raising awareness, understanding, and empathy.Actress & activist Glenn Close co-founded Bring Change to Mind in 2010 after her sister, Jessie Close, was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and her nephew, Calen Pick, with schizoaffective disorder.Every individual who speaks out inspires another. And another. That’s how we’ll end the stigma around mental illness. That’s how we’ll Bring Change to Mind.#HumanToHuman is being distributed through the traditional media channels of broadcast, radio, print, digital, social media, and out of home. All of the campaign assets are available free of charge for use in media outlets, conferences, educational settings, community events, and wherever a conversation needs to begin. We want to extend our deepest gratitude to all of the participants who have given so generously of their time and expertise. In particular, we’d like to acknowledge Endeavor Films for directing, filming, and producing Human to Human; Guru for designing and creating the campaign; Media Storm for distributing the assets to a vast array media outlets; the team of performers who shared their talent and stories; and the BC2M HS Club Members who both helped to shape this concept and took part in the PSA.
