“The Daily Iowa” expansion means more than just new opportunities for students [Video]

IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – A new generation of reporters may be the answer to keeping small newspapers alive.

The nonprofit that runs “The Daily Iowan” has purchased two weekly newspapers: the Solon Economist and the Mount Vernon-Lisbon Sun. This means students in the University of Iowa’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication will get even more opportunities to write news.

“We came up with a new headline for the project,” Sabine Martin said as she talked with other students in “The Daily Iowan” newsroom.

Martin is the Executive Editor of the weekly paper and oversees what’s being published.

“The point of “The Daily Iowan” is just getting your boots on the ground and reporting,” she said.

Martin is a Senior and already has a fellowship lined up for the summer, but she said adding the Mount Vernon-Lisbon Sun and Solon Economist would keep two local newspapers operating while creating …
