Phrase: one fell swoop
Use: They canceled the contract and all biz relationships with the offensive company all in one fell swoop.
Meaning: done in a single quick action or effort.
History: Chalk this one up to Shakespeare’s Macbeth where the playwright likens the murder of Macduff’s wife and children to a hawk swooping down on defenseless prey. The use of fell in the original context means “cruel” or “ruthless,” which is uniquely different from the current meaning of more of a sudden action. Maybe the speed with which actions happen can relate to their cruelty. Something to consider when communicating large changes.
