About a year ago, I made a couple videos about a pastor named Kevin: a hardline fundamentalist who radicalized his congregation by setting them against “the world” and grossly misrepresenting atheists. This included several brazen lies about some interactions he’d had with me online. It was a pretty good time.
Today I’m dealing with another sermon in which he mischaracterizes “the world” to his congregation. In this case he paints them all as “lost” people who need Jesus and puzzles over why they aren’t coming to church. The trick is that when doing this, he has to assume Christianity itself is inevitably appealing to people and thus that there must be some other reason churches in the U.S. are shrinking. This leads to a lot of overly elaborate theories for something that has a straightforward explanation, and it ultimately builds to a bizarre strategy for recruiting new Christians.
NOTE: I do not post links back to his sermon (or give his full name or that of his church) for a few reasons. I know him personally and used to go to his church, and he’s a very minor figure who I want to use as an object lesson in the behavior of pastors without elevating his platform.
