READING, Pa. – During his 2024 state budget address, Gov. Josh Shapiro acknowledged that Pennsylvania is the only state with a divided legislature, and they’ll need to compromise.
However, Republicans said the state needs to be careful to avoid unnecessary spending.
“No one here — I don’t care what party you’re in — should be OK with an unconstitutional education system for our kids,” Shapiro said during his address.
“I think it was a very encouraging budget address,” said state Sen. Judy Schwank (D-Berks). “And what I liked the most is that it builds upon some of the accomplishments that we’ve had in the past year.”
Shapiro’s plan proposed more than $1 billion in new funding for public schools. Nearly $900 million of that would make sure schools have resources to support students, but those numbers concern Republicans in the state House.
