Running to London [Video]

On Friday 22nd July 2022 I set out on a 310km run from Swansea High Street Station in Swansea, south Wales to Paddington Station in London, arriving four days later on Monday 25th July 2022.As an avid (but amateur) distance runner I have always been keen to test myself with a challenge that really tested me to limits and this was it.In March 2022, my Mother-in-Law Patricia Quirk was diagnosed with Adenocarcinoma, a form of cancer that is incredibly hard, if not impossible to treat. Sadly, she passed away peacefully a day after finding out her diagnosis having presumably suffered with the illness for a number of months.I decided then that I wanted to do something to raise money and awareness for Tenovus Cancer Care, a cancer charity based in Wales that have been helping individuals affected by cancer and their families and friends. It made sense to undertake this challenge to do this, Pat herself had spent 30+ years working for the DVLA and as part of her role she would regularly take the train from Swansea to Paddington, so it made sense to follow the route that Pat herself took hundreds of times over the years.I set about upping my training, going from running around 50km a week to about 110km a week. I started doing 50km runs every Saturday to increase my stamina and I created a JustGiving page to help Tenovus out.I initially set a £1000 target, which was broke in a week or so. We raised the target to £2000, which again was broken quickly. We raised the target again to £3000, which was broken a few days before the challenge started. During the run, due to the amount of donations coming in I decided to raise the target once more to £4000 and we managed to beat that target a week after the run’s completion. This video documents my training process, clips from the four days spent running from Swansea to London, some photographs that I took along the way and some comments from myself about the run.I hope you enjoy this video as much as I enjoyed making it. Please sit back, relax and enjoy. The donation link will be open until late September, so if you would still like to donate you can do so by visiting www.justgiving.com/runningtolondon

Fundraiser for My Pet Cat and Best Friend [Video]

https://gofund.me/a5b9ee3dHello, my name is Nicholas Vandermeulen. I am fundraising for my pet cat and best friend, Sukie. She has been with me her whole life. She is now ten years of age. She loves being with me, and I love being with her. As far as she is concerned, nothing is wrong. However, she has cancer which is noticeably spreading along her belly. After three visits to three separate veterinary hospitals thus far, reports indicate that cancer has yet to extend as far as the chest or lymphatic system. Meaning she has a short window of opportunity for surgery. Without the mastectomy, the cancerous masses continue to grow larger. She, a relatively healthy and joyful cat, will have months to live. Currently, one of the masses bleeds. I do not know what might come next as she succumbs to cancer. With the surgery, she may live for years to come. I believe we would experience a much more comfortable and pleasant life together after surgery. At the completion of this fundraiser, she will undergo surgery as soon as possible. Without the completion of this fundraiser, she will not undergo surgery. I’ve set the fundraiser amount to slightly less than the cost estimate provided by the veterinary hospital. I do not have that amount of money. I have spent approximately $840 on the examinations, X-rays, and antibiotics. Attached is all the documentation provided by the veterinary hospital. Thank you.

I Try Running A 100 Mile Ultramarathon…Again (Centurion North Downs Way 100 2022) [Video]

After failing my first attempt at a 100 miler by bailing out of the Centurion Thames Path 100 in May 2022 at 73 miles, I decided to get back into the 100 mile saddle and settle some unfinished business. 3 days after quitting the Thames Path, I booked onto the very well known North Downs Way 100. This is a race that I first heard about from my brother, Jack, who said that ‘the North Downs Way 100 scares me’. One of our favourite running YouTubers, the highly talented Ben Parkes, had failed it twice before finally completing it in 2018. With a Thames Path 100 ‘Did Not Finish’ fresh in the bag, and these facts combined, you could say that things weren’t looking good for me hoping to finish arguably one of the toughest foot races in England. In the months leading up to race day, I slowly upped my training volume in a slightly more structured way than usual. In addition to increasing my weekly mileage steadily, I also started introducing hill workouts and long runs on the North Downs Way itself, often running sections anywhere between Bluebell Hill and Ashford. On race day eve, I got a train from my home town of Maidstone in Kent up to Farnham in Surrey and stayed at the lovely Bush Hotel which is about half a mile from the start line. When I woke up, I was half terrified half excited to get my race gear on and make my way to registration. Despite all my training and preparation, this race was easily the hardest physical thing I have ever done and I’m so grateful to have learnt so much by taking it on. Hopefully, this video serves as a useful account of what it’s like to run the race on the day and also what pitfalls to look out for. Massive thank you to my brother Jack who surprised me by deciding to pace me from Bluebell Hill to the finish line (the last 29 miles) at the last minute. He’d initially planned to just be crew for that one aid station and bring me supplies, but I’m so glad he upped the race day duties and promoted himself to pacer! I was not having a good time due to some shoe issues (described in the debrief), so it was great having someone to chat rubbish with in the last quarter to think about something else.Thank you to Centurion. The staff for organising the event and the volunteers for the exceptional support and friendliness at aid stations. I’ve done quite a few races and you just can’t beat the Centurion aid stations. I forgot to mention them in the debrief, but I want to give a special shout out to the couple at the crew point just after the Medway Bridge. The flapjack they gave me was unbelievable and I’m certain they’d do very well on Bake Off. My official time was 26 hours, 22 minutes and 11 seconds, and I placed 76th out of 151 finishers. Video of 60,000 Rubber Ducks Being Dumped Into Chicago River Is Something Else 8/5/2022 [Video]

Video of 60,000 Rubber Ducks Being Dumped Into Chicago River Is Something Else 8/5/2022https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/offbeat/video-of-60000-rubber-ducks-being-dumped-into-chicago-river-is-something-else/ar-AA10lKHd?li=BBnb7KzKathleen Joyce – Friday It’s all for a good cause! It’s a common sight to see ducks happily swimming and floating down a river. However, that’s referring to live ducks. It’s much less common to see a RUBBER duck floating down the river…much less 60,000 of them! This sight might be a bit more familiar to you if you live in Chicago, though. Every year, tens of thousands of rubber ducks are dumped straight into the Chicago River as part of the Chicago Duck Derby. TikTok user @foodbychicago captured the start of this year’s derby on video. The sight of them being dumped from the back of a truck makes it look like a yellow waterfall!View the original article to see embedded media. https://wanderwisdom.com/news/rubber-ducks-chicago-riverThat’s a pretty cool sight to see and all, but still… why? In the video’s description, @foodbychicago says “Relax, they’re rubber ducks. 😎 it’s for a good cause.” WHAT CAUSE?! The video’s creator did not clarify.Luckily, some commenters helpfully explained the purpose of the Duck Derby. “It’s a fundraiser for people with special needs. Each duck someone pays $5 for and whoever wins the race wins the prize and the money is donated,” explained user @ashley.dame12. Aw, now that’s sincerely very cool.Of course, with all of that plastic going into the water, people were naturally worried about pollution. “They just b puttin any thing in there huh” quipped user @lowhangingfruit5. “Dave Matthew band in town” joked user @rbawsum, referencing the time the Dave Matthews Band emptied their tour bus’s septic tank over a passenger boat in the Chicago River…not the nicest mental image to associate with these ducks. But don’t worry- the ducks don’t stay in the water long. As user @tylercimi explains, “It’s not pollution. Those yellow floating lines in the water are nets to help trap them. They then pick up all of them up and reuse them next year.” We love that! Reduce, reuse, recycle… raise money for charity! This Duck Derby is absolutely adorable, lowkey hilarious, and raises tons of money each year for a great cause. What’s not to love?
