Denison receives grant for Katy Trail phase two – KTEN [Video]

DENISON, Texas (KTEN) — The City of Denison received a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation to fully fund phase two of their Katy Trail project.

TxDOT’s Texas Transportation Commission awarded the city more than $2.8 million through a federal transit administration grant. The initial grant application, filed in 2022, requested only $2 million.

“This has been a process that started back in 2015, and once phase one was completed, we immediately started applying for phase two funding, and that just kinda rolled right in,” said Kimberly Bowen, Denison grants and special projects administrator.

While TxDOT only funded 20 percent of phase one’s cost, phase two is completely covered by the grant.

“It’ll tie into project and construction costs,” said parks and recreation director Justin Eastwood. “A lot of that will be teased out through our design company and the groups that are going to be working on the design project specifically.”
