Nusa Penida island to me is an adventure playground. From breathtaking views to surreal landscapes. When visiting this island you will be blown away by its beauty immediately. Nusa Penida has a few famous beaches such as Kelingking Beach, Crystal Bay, Broken Beach, and Manta Point. This island is a great place to explore when visiting Bali.
GETTING TO NUSA PENIDA ISLAND
Travelling to Nusa Penida is very easy with various boat companies offering fast boats from different ports on Bali island. The easiest and most common port to depart from is SANUR BEACH. This is close to all the touristy locations in Bali such as Canggu, Seminyak, and Kuta. The boat trip from Sanur to Penida island will take around 40 Minutes.
A boat ticket across to Nusa Penida will cost around 7$ -15$ depending on which company you use. For a faster and cheaper route I recommend travelling up the west coast of Bali to a port called Kusambe. Here you can use a boat company I recommend called GANGGA EXPRESS.
A ticket here will be cheaper and is only 7$ for a one way journey. The time to cross from Bali to Penida is only 15 minutes when using this port.
Using Kusambe port instead of Sanur will also help those who suffer from sea sickness. As the crossing between Sanur and Nusa Penida can have big waves. Where as the crossing from Kusambe to Penida is a lot more flat and protected from the swell.
EXPLORING NUSA PENIDA ISLAND
Once on Nusa Penida Island you will need a mode of Transport. I suggest renting a scooter from a local when you arrive at your port on Nusa Penida. Scooters will cost around 7-10$ per day to rent. You also have the option to get a private tour guide to show you around in a AC car.
Using a scooter gives you freedom to explore at your own time and freedom.
GETTING TO DIAMOND BEACH & ATUH BEACH
These beaches are located in the South East side. It will take you around 1 hour from Sampalan harbor, and around 1 hour 30 minutes from Toya Pakeh port. There is a small entrance fee to the beach that you need to pay when arriving.
I recommend going for sunrise as these beaches have great views for sunrise. The stairs down to both beaches will take you around 10-15 minutes. Do be careful as the stairs are steep and can be dangerous.
Try visiting Diamond Beach during low tide as then you will have the ability to go onto the beach. When the tide is high there is no beach.
Bring cash with you as there are no atm’s in this area, and not all restaurants offer card machine. If you want to get the famous Instagram photo at Diamond Beach then it will cost 200k Rupiah, 15$. You will need cash for this.
Atuh Beach offers some warungs for eating at where as Diamond beach does not. Atuh beach is perfect for relaxing at and spending some time on.
ACCOMODATION ON NUSA PENIDA
There are variety of Homestays and bungalows in this area. We stayed at a local favourite called Sun Colada. This homestay is only 5 minutes to Diamond beach. It offers all you need from wifi, to AC and hot water. The rooms are comfortable and the owner Gede is very friendly.
