There is a new energy this week from a group crucial to winning the 2024 Presidential Election Black voters.Half a dozen community organizers knocked on doors on Milwaukee’s Northwest side Thursday, listening to and learning from Black voters like Alicia Jewell. She is happy to see a change at the top of the Democratic ticket.”Biden just couldn’t uphold the job. He was a good guy and he knew what he was doing,” she told WISN 12 News. When asked about Vice President Kamala Harris, Jewell said, “She got my vote.””It wasn’t like she’s coming into something she knew nothing about. She was the Vice President,” she added.Freddie Bredley agreed and plans to vote for who she hopes will be the first woman president.”This has been a long time coming for us, and Biden has really fought for us for over 54 years and to see him nominate Harris, I am so happy about it,” she said.Angela Lang, Executive Director of Black Leaders Organizing for Communities, or BLOC, said her ambassadors are seeing a monumental shift. BLOC is a nonprofit encouraging civic engagement and empowerment in Black communities.”A lot of folks have actually compared this to the same type of enthusiasm as 2008, President Obama’s first election,” she said.”Fundraising numbers are exploding, and people are really energized for the first time in this electoral cycle,” she added. The Black voters 12 News spoke with believe Harris can deliver on issues most important to them.”I think she’s gonna bring a lot..especially abortion, and rights for women,” Bredley said.”Women’s issues, joblessness, homelessness. She’s wonderful. She can run this country, she’s a younger generation than both Biden and of course Trump, but I can hope she can do it,” Reggie Brown said.On Sunday and Monday night, thousands of people participated in two separate Zoom calls, “Win with Black Women,” and “Win with Black Men.” They raised more than $2 million for the Harris campaign.

Children with arthritis raise funds through ‘Art for Arthritis’ event [Video]

Arthritis, a condition often associated with aging, also affects hundreds of thousands of children. This week, local children living with the disease are participating in a fundraiser called “Art for Arthritis.” Among them is 11-year-old Natalie Ufford of Olathe, whose artwork has not only empowered her, but will also soon help others.”My favorite part has been working with and just like our friendship that we’ve built and like, making all this cool art,” said Natalie.Natalie, who has juvenile arthritis, is being mentored by professional artist Anne Kostrevic-Smith. She has created paintings that will be sold at a fundraising gala this Friday. The largest paintings will be auctioned live.”I’m a little nervous, but, I mean, I think it’ll be fun,” Natalie said.Natalie’s arthritis was diagnosed early in her childhood. She manages it with medical therapies. Her mother, Karen Ufford, spoke about her daughter’s strength throughout her journey.”I was pretty emotional when she had that first diagnosis because she was so young. And that’s not fair, right?” Karen Ufford said.”I’m proud of the way she’s been able to get through it and coming out on the other side stronger.”Natalie and Kostrevic-Smith have formed a strong friendship. They’re excited that their shared passion for art will now raise money to help others with arthritis.”So what I would say to the audience is you are not just bidding on art, you are bidding on a piece of heart and soul from each one of these children, and that will be your greatest gift,” said Kostrevic-Smith.Eight local children will be auctioning off their artwork this Friday at the “Art for Arthritis” fundraiser. The event is being held at the Loews Hotel downtown. Tickets start at $125, and doors open at 6:30 p.m. For those who can’t attend, some of the artwork can also be bid on online.
