‘We’re swimming two miles in memory of our friend and colleague [Video]

Becky O’Dwyer, lead nurse and Vanessa Taylor, a matron, at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, are taking on the Great North Swim in Lake Windermere on June 7 after they were inspired by the late Tony Hinton’s love of swimming.

The challenge will be in aid of Your Trust Charity, the organisation’s registered charity, to fund equipment to enhance the experience of patients and staff.

Becky said: “It’s a great opportunity to raise money for a good cause, whilst also remembering a friend.”

The pair said that Tony had a lengthy career of more than 25 years at City Hospital and remembered him as a supportive and respected colleague with a great sense of humour.

Vanessa said: “We’d had this idea before Tony had passed away and told him all about it. He offered to coach us to success.

“So it’s only fitting that we carry out the challenge …

Black voters in Milwaukee feel excited, hopeful for Kamala Harris [Video]

There is a new energy this week from a group crucial to winning the 2024 Presidential Election Black voters.Half a dozen community organizers knocked on doors on Milwaukee's Northwest side Thursday, listening to and learning from Black voters like Alicia Jewell. She is happy to see a change at the top of the Democratic ticket."Biden just couldn't uphold the job. He was a good guy and he knew what he was doing," she told WISN 12 News.When asked about Vice President Kamala Harris, Jewell said, "She got my vote.""It wasn't like she's coming into something she knew nothing about. She was the Vice President," she added.Freddie Bredley agreed and plans to vote for who she hopes will be the first woman president."This has been a long time coming for us, and Biden has really fought for us for over 54 years and to see him nominate Harris, I am so happy about it," she said.Angela Lang, Executive Director of Black Leaders Organizing for Communities, or BLOC, said her ambassadors are seeing a monumental shift. BLOC is a nonprofit encouraging civic engagement and empowerment in Black communities."A lot of folks have actually compared this to the same type of enthusiasm as 2008, President Obama's first election," she said."Fundraising numbers are exploding, and people are really energized for the first time in this electoral cycle," she added.The Black voters 12 News spoke with believe Harris can deliver on issues most important to them."I think she's gonna bring a lot..especially abortion, and rights for women," Bredley said."Women's issues, joblessness, homelessness. She's wonderful. She can run this country, she's a younger generation than both Biden and of course Trump, but I can hope she can do it," Reggie Brown said.On Sunday and Monday night, thousands of people participated in two separate Zoom calls, "Win with Black Women," and "Win with Black Men." They raised more than $2 million for the Harris campaign.
